Congratulations, Steve

After years of dedication and service to the labour and community movement, the Labour Education Centre (LEC) bids a heartfelt farewell to Steve Shallhorn, who retires this year.

Steve’s journey with LEC has been one of unwavering commitment, vision, and leadership. Serving LEC since 2012, including as Executive Director and most recently as Managing Director of Working Green 2050, Steve has guided the organization through periods of growth, transformation, and impact. His leadership under the umbrella of the Toronto & York Region Labour Council has left a lasting mark not only on LEC, but on the broader labour movement across Toronto and beyond.

Throughout his career, Steve has embodied the values etched on the ceremonial plaque gifted to him to commemorate his storied career: Climate Activist. Change Maker. Community Builder. Pillar of the Labour Movement.

From championing climate justice to strengthening labour education, Steve’s work has always centered on creating a just, more sustainable future for working people and their communities. His time organizing, educating, and inspiring have paved the way for a new generation of leaders to carry forward this mission.

At his retirement celebration, colleagues, friends, and community members gathered to honour his remarkable contributions. In presenting him with a ceremonial plaque, we recognized his years of dedication and the indelible legacy he leaves behind.

On behalf of everyone at the Labour Education Centre, the Toronto & York Region Labour Council, and the many lives he has touched: thank you, Steve, for your vision, passion, and decades of service. Your work will continue to inspire us as we continue to build a better future for all.

We wish you a joyful and fulfilling retirement—you’ve more than earned it.
