Information and Referral Counselor

Employment Services is hiring full-time, permanent, unionized (Cope 343) Information and Referral Counselor to connect with clients. This is the first point of contact for Employment Services clients and is responsible for providing resource and information services to individuals entering or re-entering into the labour market. Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge:

  • Two years experience in employment programs
  • Familiarity and experience with various computer programs including: MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access) and Internet
  • Hands-on experience in the delivery of services to individuals entering or re-entering into the labour market including, conducting assessments; resume writing and interview skills; providing one-to-one support.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of workers who are newcomers, workers of colour, women who work, LGBTQ2+ workers, and other equity-seeking workers
  • Demonstrated ability to behave ethically, ensure that confidentiality is maintained, exercise discretion and good judgement interacting with clients, other colleagues, unions and other external organizations
  • Able to work as part of a team and independently; receive/give constructive feedback; foster a safe and respectful workplace; comply with LEC and funder(s)’ policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Post-secondary education in social services or administration
  • Understanding and critical analysis of challenges and systemic barriers to labour market integration
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to clearly convey information and ideas
  • Computer literacy
  • Proven ability to work with individuals with employment barriers (i.e. youth, social assistance recipients, retrained workers, internationally trained professionals, etc.)
  • Goal orientated, highly organized, flexible and adaptable with superior time management skills
  • Ability to multi-task and manage a high-volume workload with accuracy
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research and knowledge of how to prospect new clients

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide screening of clients virtually, by phone and in person for eligibility to programs and service
  • Keep current on the access requirements to training programs, colleges and labour market requirements and work closely with the Employment Service staff
  • Client service planning and coordination, determine service pathway either through assisted or unassisted services
  • Maintain and update LEC resource room (job boards, events, etc.)
  • Support clients with constructing resumes and cover letters
  • Provide support with filling out registrations, applications to access education (Better Jobs Ontario) and or employment
  • Prepare and conduct information session workshops on employment and other services
  • Outreach to local communities to develop partnerships and draw new clients to the centre
  • Support with marketing of programs and services through social media and update flyers and website
  • Schedule appointments for clients
  • Actively participate in and prepare for regular team and individual supervision meetings with the Supervisor and other LEC staff
  • Make pro-active recommendations to enhance program service delivery
  • Adhere to LEC and Funder policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Ensure a team approach in all aspects of program development
  • Act as a representative for LEC and the Program to partner organizations, unions and other
    community agencies as required
  • EOIS-CaMS data entry (entering tombstone info, creating Employment Service Plans, closing Employment Service plans, etc)
  • Perform other duties as required

Working Conditions:

  • The position is full time permanent and reports to the Coordinator-Employment Services
  • This is a bargaining unit position of the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union (COPE) Local 343.
  • The full-time salary is $63,160 (annual) including benefit package, 4 weeks’ vacation, and paid winter holiday shutdown
  • The successful candidate will be required to work in office Monday through Friday-895 Don Mills, North York, ON, M3C 1W3
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends and travel to various locations
  • A current drivers’ license. Access to a vehicle is an asset and must be able to travel within the GTA
