A project of the Toronto & York Region Labour Council in partnership with George Brown College. [COPE 343] |
2002 - Present In 2002, the Labour Education Centre moved to our present location, on the first floor of the Ontario Federation of Labour building in the Don Mills & Eglinton area of Toronto. Also, we dropped the "Metro" from our name and became the "Labour Education Centre". The Toronto & York Region Labour Council along with its two projects; the Labour Education Centre and Labour Community Services were now under one roof! "As a committee we have found LEC to be a fountain of knowledge we could draw on. They have provided us with numerous services which we would encourage people to use. In the big black void of unemployment they have been our guiding light. Need a lifesaver...call LEC." - Schlumberger Employee's Adjustment Committee/IAM During the last couple of years, the Toronto area has suffered from the economic fall-out of "9-11", the "SARS" crisis and continued restructuring in industry. We've assisted HERE Local 75 in setting up their "Hospitality Workers Resource Centre" in downtown Toronto. LEC has continued to respond, setting up and operating the Visteon Action Centre for the 800 employees who lost their jobs when Visteon close their Markham manufacturing plant. Members of CAW Local 112 at Bombardier Aerospace have continued to suffer staff cuts. LEC has been there to provide employment counselling assistance. Our Literacy and Basic Skills classes for unemployed workers and our Labour Studies programme continue as always. - end - |
