gcflogoThe Goodwill Community Foundation based in the U.S. offers free online learning tutorials that will help you improve your reading, math and computer skills through their “LearnFree” website.

GCFLearnFree.org contains hundreds of interactive tutorials to help you learn how to make use of office software, social media sites and many other online services.    There are also interactive tutorials on reading skills and to help you out with your math.

Black History Month at LEC!

Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman (1820-1913) helped escaped American slaves find refuge in Canada during the 1850′s.

This month, the Labour Education Centre’s Literacy & Basic Skills (LBS) Programme in conjunction with our partners at Labour Community Services is hosting a noon hour “Lunch and Learn” film series to celebrate Black History Month on Wednesdays from noon till 1 PM.

If you happen to be in the neighbourhood (Suite 100 at 15 Gervais Drive in Toronto), please feel free to join us!

New! Saturday Morning LBS Class

The Labour Education Centre is starting a new Saturday morning Literacy & Basic Skills (LBS) class that will run from 10 AM to 1 PM.

Minduka_EducationThe LBS programme is an upgrading programme for people who want to improve their English, math and computer skills for work, learning and life.   The programme will take place here at the Labour Education Centre on the first floor of the Ontario Federation of Labour building,  located at 15 Gervais Drive near Don Mills & Eglinton.    (click here for a Google Map of our location)

New Employment Service Hours Starting January 14th!

Effective the week of January 14, 2013 the Labour Education Centre’s Employment Service Unit will have new hours of operation in order to server you better!

From Monday to Wednesday and on Fridays we will be open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

On Thursdays we will open at 9:00 AM and stay open late until 7:30 PM so that we can provide service during the early evening hours.

December 11th – Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown LRT Update!

The new Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown LRT will soon make it much easier for you to get to the Labour Education Centre by public transit!

“Metrolinx“, the Ontario government agency overseeing the construction of the new LRT lines is inviting the public to an information  meeting.  At this gathering they will be  updating the community on this important transit project and share community input on a change that Metrolinx is planning to the tunnel between the new Laird and Don Mills LRT stations.

The meeting will be held from 7:00 – 9:00 PM on Tuesday, December 11th in the Telus Conference Room at the Ontario Science Centre located at 770 Don Mills Road.

Our Literacy & Basic Skills (LBS) programme will be holding an information session on Friday, December 7th at 10:00 AM for our upcoming January 7th, 2013 class here at the Labour Education Centre, Suite 100, 15 Gervais Drive in Toronto (near Don Mills & Eglinton).

The LBS programme is an upgrading programme for people who wish to improve their English. math and computer skills for work, learning and life.    Classes take place Monday to Thursday from 9:15 AM to 2:30 PM and are open to residents of Ontario over 19 years of age who can speak and understand English.

Job Posting – LBS Instructor (Temporary Full-time)

The Labour Education Centre has an opening for a Temporary Full-time instructor for our Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) programme.    This position requires the applicant to be available for classes from Tuesday to Saturday, with weekday classes occasionally extending into the early evening.

The position runs from January 15th to December 21st, 2013.

The City of Toronto will be holding a “Career and Information Fair” on Thursday, October 25th from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge St. (just north of Bloor).

November 1st – LEC Celebrates 25 Years!

It’s been twenty-five years since the Labour Education Centre opened it’s doors in the abandoned Eastern Canadian sales office of Massey Ferguson on King Street West.

That old building was torn down years ago but LEC remains alive and well!

And we’re having a party to celebrate our first quarter century!

LEC will be holding an open house from 4:30 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, November 1st, 2012.
